Neville and his Band played a a brilliant set and took us through all the big old ska standards from 50’s/60’s to The Specials’ top catalogue of ska classics of the late seventies. The band played super tight and groovy and Neville seemed such a nice guy both off and on stage where he oozes charm –you just cannot not like this man.
Our Dub Pistols set was great, though it felt a little bit like the first gig of the year….which it was. A couple of adjustments was needed…. which we luckily had fully under control the next day when we repeated the whole thing @ The Globe in Cardiff, and played a super inspired set.
After about an hour the breakdown assistance guy turned up, took one quick look (and sniff) under the hood and declared a blown head gasket, following it swiftly up with “where do you wanna go” ? –Luckily I didn’t have to reply with “King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow”…….which probably wouldn’t have been that fun travelling to on the flatbed of a tow truck…
Despite all this, I was well happy with the gig. It all felt really good once we got going, and several friends came up afterwards and told me that they actually preferred the “rawer, basic” sound of the three piece compared to the more sophisticated and BIG sound of the four piece.
Ollie Hipkin and Ben Ferrari played great !, as always, and all in all I think I can declare the Three Piece Experience a success …at least for smaller venues when the amazing Chloe Treacher can’t make the gig.
Unfortunately no one took any photo's at The Queens Head....so here's one of Ben Ferrari with some veg....
